Prayer Shawl
It all began one Sunday after the 10:30 services on a bench outsite the Parish Hall. One woman sharing her love of knitting with a child was approached by another woman who had an idea for starting a new ministry at Holy Spirit.
That was three years ago and over 300 shawls ago. Shawls have been sent across the country and around the world to loved ones and friends of Holy Spirit parishioners who are bereaved, ill, or in need of pastoral care for some other concern. The shawls are gratefully received - a scrapbook for the minstry is filled with notes of gratitude and pictures of knitters, crocheters and prayer shawl recipients.
The group has about 20 active members ranging in age from 10 to 65+ The group faithfully meets in the church parlor on the 3rd. Tuesday of each month. Each meeting is followed by the Blessing of the Shawls on the next Sunday after the meeting.
Each shawl takes about 18 hours of knitting from start to finish. With each stitch the person making the shawl prays for the needs of the recipient and their family and friends - that's dedicated prayer for someone and their loved ones for 18 hours!
How does one get a Prayer Shawl? Just ask.
