Worship Ministries

At Holy Spirit we offer three worship services: an 8:00 a.m Traditional Rite I service; a 10:30 a.m Traditional Rite II service; and a 10:30 a. m. Contemporary worship service.  The variety of services allows one to be fed and nourished in a meaningful way.  Opportunities to serve exist through numerous ministries.

Altar Guild

The Altar Guild is a service organization responsible for preparing the Lord’s table and assisting the clergy. Our aim is for the clergy to be confident that all is in readiness for services in the Church and Parish Hall.  We prepare for all baptisms, confirmations, weddings, funerals, and other special services. Our weekly tasks include setting up for communion, keeping the altar and surrounding area clean, polishing the silver, filling the candles, and keeping the linens clean and pressed. The Altar Guild also decorates the church for Christmas and Easter.

Ushers

The ushers “host” the congregation at each service - greeting  individuals and families as they arrive, providing them with an Order of Worship and offering any assistance they may require. Ushers also assist with seating, collect the Offering, direct communicants during the Eucharist, and record attendance. Our mission is to assure that old, new and prospective church members and their guests feel most welcome and “at home” with Holy Spirit as their place of worship.

Acolyte Ministry

The Acolyte Guild at Holy Spirit is made up of a talented group of boys and girls, starting at 10 years of age.  This is a ministry that helps our youth learn more about our Lord and His church by serving as active participants in our worship.  The acolytes also assist clergy at weddings and funerals.

Lay Readers

Lay Readers are active communicants of the parish who have been licensed by the Bishop to assist in the leadership of worship services. Lay Readers participate in all Sunday worship services, 8:00 am and 10:30 am services in the nave, and the 10:30 am contemporary service in the Parish Hall. In addition, Lay Readers are “on call” to respond to specific requests by the Rector for funeral services and special services. Currently there are 30 Lay Readers, with 19 individuals serving in the Traditional Service, and 12 serving in the Contemporary Service.

Lectors

The Lector Ministry is a group of lay members who take an active role in the church services on a regular basis and sequence. A lector is a communicant who comes forward at the appropriate time in each service and reads the First Lesson. Scheduling is done on a four-month cycle. Lectors will be scheduled to read about twice in each cycle and are assigned to read in either the Rite I or Rite II services.  A short training and briefing is given on joining the ministry. There are currently 19 active Lectors in the schedule.

Chalice Bearers

The offering of the chalice during communion is accomplished by a group of lay ministers, all of whom are members of this parish and have been certified by the Diocese. The group consists of adult men and women and older members of the Acolytes.
